Radical Transparency

Jenna Fischer on the Cover of Wired MagazineIf you haven’t checked out the latest issue of Wired Magazine, I highly recommend going out and picking it up (and not just because Jenna Fischer is almost kinda nude on the cover). There are two articles in particular around transparency that are excellent. The See-Through CEO describes how radical transparency helped an online brokerage firm change public perceptions and grow business. Operation Channel 9 takes us through the process of how Lenn Pryor got Microsoft’s Channel 9 up and running, bringing a new level of transparency to the software giant.

I love the idea of being brutally honest. In fact, I have a shirt that reads, “I Make Things Up.” Whether I actually make things up or not (and I do), it always elicits responses from shocked t-shirt readers. I think blogging transparency has the same effect.

At work, I am lucky to have a CEO like David LaPlante who understands the value of transparency. Often, we would like to push the transparency boundaries even further, but luckily we have great employees that rein us in.

Anyway, check out the articles and let me know what you think.

Transparency, Authenticity, and Candor are huge values in my life right now — and I just wanted to say thanks for pointing out this article in Wired ;)

The world would a much better place if we spent more time being ourself instead of trying to be like someone else. Unless, of course, it’s trying to be like Ricky Bobby ’cause the world would be a lot funnier then. Shake’n'bake, right? 8-)
