In no way did I plan on reviewing two different blog authoring tools today but after listening to Monday’s Buzz Out Loud podcast I heard of this one. This is Microsoft’s foray into the space. It has a very Word like look and feel.

The installation process asked if I had a spaces account or wanted to use my own blog software. After selecting my own, it asked for the URL and username and password. After that, it auto detected all the settings without issue.

To insert this screenshot, I clicked Insert Picture which took me to my local machine. I browsed for the image and them was presented with a nice interface for alignment, drop shadow and other effects.

Unlike Writely, this software does have the option for setting trackbacks and currently there are two plugins available. One allows you to browse Flickr photos to add to your post and the other generates tags for Technorati and other tagging search engines. These two plugins appear to be community written but obviously some one had advance notice from Microsoft to prepare them.

It is very much like Zoundry, which I have been using for quite some time. It does feel a little lighter on system resources.

The web preview is really nice. It took my wordpress template and apply it perfectly giving me an acurate representation of what the post will look like. I am a little worried about the HTML/XHTML it produces. We are all a little nervous after seeing the code Frontpage produced.

Anyway, not a bad first go at it.

tags: Microsoft, Live Writer, Blogging

So Writely just went open beta meaning you don’t need an invite. Writely is the online AJAX driven word processor that Google bought a while back. It basically allows you to write documents online and share them with others. If its like Google spreadsheets, you will also be able to collaborate real-time with those that you choose to.

Once I registered and logged in, I saw the blog option and thought I would give it a spin. This post is written completely in Writely.

A couple of observations:

The UI is completely different from Google Spreadsheets. The colors, icons, layout all different.

Its a little slow.

When blogging, I don’t see a place for trackbacks

UPDATE : After posting from writely, I viewed the post. Everything looks fine except the title didn’t carry over. I had to edit in WordPress to add it. Also, the tags/categories didn’t populate when posting.

While at Technorati this morning, I noticed a small link in the upper left to take a survey. Being in marketing, I am a sucker for surveys. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they – or more likely the backer of the survey – was also going to pay me $15 to complete it (where can I find more of these types of deals?). The survey asked about websites I managed both personally and at work.

It was quite clear that the survey was commissioned by Yahoo in regards to their new adsense-like model they want to roll out. They asked me to compare brand loyalty between the two brands and then asked me a series of questions about if Yahoo Publisher Network had a certain feature, would I use it. It sounds like Yahoo is working on some pretty awesome ad revenue driven features including simple integrations of del.icio.us, flickr and possibly an analytics package. The questions didn’t outright say whether you would be able to make money with these features but it somewhat alluded to that.

My perception after the survey is that Yahoo Publisher Network will not just be adsense under a new name by a different company. Instead, I got the impression that Yahoo is really thinking outside the box on what it can do to one up Google in this area. It will be interesting to see.

UPDATE 1:20 PM 7/18/06: It was rightfully pointed out that I should link to the survey.
So Drupal is getting on my nerves. My intent this morning was to simply burn my feed with feedburner and link to the new burned feed…simple enough. However, I can not find anywhere in the Drupal settings or Drupal community how to point the Syndicate link in both the head of the document and the body of the html to the burned feed. Alright, I won’t burn the feed but lets get it on Technorati.

I go to claim this blog on Technorati and Technorati asks me to puts some JavaScript in the template…simple enough. I can’t find an easy way to do this so I download page.tpl.php from my themes directory and add it there. Re-upload, view source and things look good. However, when Technorati tried to ping my rss feed and site for this code, it can’t connect. I check the url and everything is as it should be. So my next step is to paste this code in a post: <a xhref=”http://technorati.com/claim/uvqndiw6jc” rel=”me”>Technorati Profile</a>. Hope that works. Technorati Profile
