While Tech Alliance didn’t have the official domain name cocktails.com, these Reno events were my first introduction into social networking…the kind you do in person. At the time, I was a project manager with Twelve Horses and was wet behind the ears in getting out in front of people. The nice thing about these events was that they were approachable. You could hang out, have a drink, listen to a short presentation and you didn’t feel obligated to do much more.

When Twelve Horses hired away the driving force to these events, Michael Thomas, the events eventually died out. When they came back as NCET’s Tech Thursdays, they were different – not bad…just different.

Now that I am tucked away down south in Phoenix, it seems like there is an attempt to recapture the mood of these meetings. David LaPlante has posted about WiFi Wednesdays on his blog. I hope to coordinate a few trips to Reno to attend these new events. Combining effort with the new Reno-Tahoe Young Professionals groups will make these events even that much more better.

At about 10:00 AM I was asked if a could give a 20 minute presentation to the Sparks Rotary today at 12:30 PM. At first I was going to give it on the intricacies of MySpace but that topic seemed to narrow given the audience of business owners. Therefore, with the help of Robert, I converted to more of an online social networking presentation. I covered YouTube, LinkedIn, MySpace, Nevada Chatta, blogging and podcasting. It was well received and fun to give. I decided to upload the powerpoint screens for anyone interested in viewing them.

It must be hard to scroll through the Associated Press feeds each morning and fill up the business section of the RGJ with stories. I write this because most of the AP stories are pretty irrelevant to readers in Reno and Sparks and I want to show some compassion to the effort that it must take. With all the time taken up in this selection process, there obviously isn’t any time to send reporters out to actually report on local news.

Come on, has the RGJ fired all their business reporters in favor of those who can cover the Darren Mack story. Or maybe the RGJ is so worried about the Northern Nevada Business Weekly that they have reassigned all their reporters to The Business Report. Therefore, if I want local business news, I have to wait for the monthly issue.

The only reason I still read the RGJ is for local news. If I want AP regurgitation, I will open up my web browser, go to my new aggregator and see all the top headlines I want. But hey, at least the RGJ has a blog strategy right?
