I had the opportunity to visit the Spa Avania at the Hyatt Regency in Scottsdale. This is a $9 million spa with all the amenities.

Outside the Avania Spa

Spa treatments are completely foreign to me. I’ve had one massage in my life - on my honeymoon in Cancun - and the word spa conjures up images of bathrobes, cucumber eyes, and fingernail polishing.

What I discovered was that I could easily become addicted to the pampering. After checking in at the spa, I was given a tour of the facilities. I’ve read that 51% of spa goers don’t take full advantage of the spa ammenities, so it was nice to have someone tour me around and let me ask questions. Ammenities included:

All bathroom toiletries (ravors, hair gel, q-tips, shampoo, etc)

Men’s only hot tub outside (not too appealing in 100 degree heat)

Men’s only cold plunge (basically a pool they keep at 65 degrees)

Men’s Sauna with aromatic infused towels to place on your face in the suana

A beautiful mineral swimming pool that contained no chlorine. The water was very soft and felt great.

Weight room with aerobic exercise equipment

Yoga room

Relaxation room

Massage options

Manicure, pedicure, and facial options

Avania Spa Lobby

The whole experience made it easy to forget about day-to-day worries. The pure pampering and seclusion creates an area of distance between you and reality. I participated in a short introductory 20 minute yoga session. This was my first yoga class, and I was surprised by the effort it took. The instructor was great and I could envision myself doing yoga on a regular basis.

After that, I hung out by the pool until my masseuse came out and got me. I was then treated to the best 60 minutes of my life. The Hyatt Spa offers many different massage options. I chose the Avania, which is described as: Soothing - Rejuvenating - Classic. It was all those things. I had helped my sister-in-law move the night before, so it was great to have my muscles worked. I had the option of choosing a male or female massage therapist. I’ve heard that some guys like massages by males because they can apply more pressure and really work your body. However, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable with that arrangement. It was comforting to know I had a choice.
