The Hummer, The BMW, and The Ford Explorer
At some point or another, I have done my daily tasks on each of the big three operating systems. When I was a programmer, I used Red Hat Linux daily. When I moved into project management, I switched to Windows. Most recently, I toil my days away on a MacBook Pro running OS X Tiger. I’ve always had an analogy to help articulate the differences: The Hummer, The BMW, and The Ford Explorer.
The Hummer (on BioDiesel)
Linux is an an H1. It can do manly and powerful things on and off the road; however, you sacrifice some comfort for utility. The passenger seat is cramped, but you can add all kinds of cargo units on the back. It won’t break down, but it’s not the easiest thing to park.
The BMW
OS X is the BMW. It’s very attractive and costs a little more, but it’s sport tuned and has nice amenities. If it breaks down, you’re taking it to a special service shop, but all in all it’s reliable.
The Ford Explorer
Windows is the Ford Explorer. It gets the job done. You can fit many people inside or fold the seats down for easy storage. There are a ton of after market accessories, but some might do more harm then good. Reliability is a little spotty, but if you maintain a strong maintenance schedule it should last for a couple hundred thousand miles.
